To help you feel prepared, we’ve included general home care instructions below. You can review these tips ahead of time or refer back to them whenever needed.

General Home Care Guidelines

These tips for caring for your teeth and gums after common dental treatments will help a smooth recovery and long-term oral health.
After Fillings
  • Avoid eating or drinking hot beverages until the numbness wears off to prevent accidental injury.
  • Stick to soft foods for the first 24 hours if sensitivity persists.
  • Mild sensitivity to cold or pressure is normal and should subside within a few days.
  • Maintain your normal routine of brushing morning and evening, and daily flossing.
  • Ibuprofen, Tylenol, or Aspirin can be taken as prescribed to help with any tenderness.
After Extractions
  • Bite down gently on the gauze pad provided to control bleeding and change it as needed.
  • Avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, or vigorous rinsing for at least 72 hours to prevent dry socket.
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and take prescribed or over-the-counter pain relief as directed.
  • Limit exercise for the first 24 hours, increased blood pressure may cause more bleeding.
  • Drink lots of fluid and nutritious soft food on the day of extraction, resume normal eating when you are comfortable.
After Crowns or Bridges
  • Avoid sticky or hard foods that could dislodge temporary crowns.
  • Brush and floss gently around the treated area until permanent restorations are placed.
  • If sensitivity persists beyond a few days, please call our office.
After Teeth Whitening
  • Avoid dark-colored foods and beverages (like coffee, red wine, and tea) for 48 hours to prevent staining.
  • Use a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth if you experience discomfort.
After A Root Canal
  • Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until a permanent crown or filling is placed.
  • It’s normal to feel some sensitivity or mild discomfort, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.
After Veneers
  • Avoid hard or crunchy foods (like apples or nuts) for the first 24–48 hours to allow the veneers to fully bond.
  • Use non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid damaging the surface of your veneers.
  • If your veneers feel uneven or uncomfortable, call our office for an adjustment.
  • Protect your veneers by wearing a mouthguard during sports or if you grind your teeth at night.
After Dental Sealants
  • Avoid eating sticky or hard foods (like caramel or ice) for the first 24 hours to help the sealants set properly.
  • Your teeth might feel slightly different at first, but this is normal and will go away in a day or two.
  • Continue brushing and flossing as usual—sealants protect your teeth but don’t replace good oral hygiene.
After Dental Implants
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean the area around the implant. Avoid electric toothbrushes or water flossers unless advised by your dentist.
  • Rinse with a saltwater solution (1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) 2–3 times a day to keep the area clean.
  • Stick to soft foods for the first few days and avoid chewing on the side of your mouth with the implant.
  • Take any prescribed medications as directed and call us if you notice unusual swelling, bleeding, or pain.
